On the first day of 2024, Joys hosted a quiet, looping screening of Lithuanian artist Evaldas Jansas’ Linkejimai/Wishes (1998). Recorded on the days leading up to New Year’s Eve in 1998, Jansas asked passersby in Vilnius what they wished for for themselves and others at the dawn of a new year. The result is a sequence of candid talking heads of people reflecting on this question in various locales. One of the earliest works of video art from Lithuania, Linkejimai/Wishes offers a glimpse into the values, fantasies, and anxieties of Jansas’ subjects.
This event was co-curated by Veronika Ivanova, a curator, writer, and radio host who screens this work in some capacity at the beginning/end of each year.
Toronto-based Ashley Diana Culver of Soupy Club was invited to contribute a custom menu of hearty, vegan soups to accompany this screening.
Soup menu:
Wish for Lightness (2024)
Roasted Garlic & Potato Soup
Wish for Abundance (2024)
Brown Lentil Soup
Served with Pickled Red Onion & Mustard Seeds
